The most trouble i had with one of the standards is the one labeled ELAALRL2. I didn't really know what theme was and what the standard was asking but i did some research on it and applied what i had learned to help me do my work.
I chose to write about the Jazz Age. I chose the topic because it seems interesting the gangsters, the use of alcohol, and the music. I also can just visualize the moments and the lifestyle of that time.
The Camel's Back by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Story was about a man named Perry Pankhurst who was in love with Betty Medill.
He tries to marry her but she refuses to marry him because she isn't really sure about tying the knot right now. so Perry Storms off through the night just wondering around till he bumps into a strange man that offers him a drink. Perry is like sure what have i got to lose. he wasn't planning on going to any more parties because he did that all the time, but after drinking he changes his mind constantly.
So there is this circus ball that he wants to attend. he was pretty sure the woman he loved was going to be there but it didn't matter. so he goes to this costume shop to get an costume for the party what he wants has all ready been rented to other people. so the employee introduces him to this camel suite. he likes it but can find a partner. The fact that he couldn't find a partner made him very sad and delusional so by now he's having flashbacks of Betty. so he gets in this cab and on the way to the wrong party he offers the cab driver a sum of money to be in the suite with him. The Cab driver refuses heavily because he figured he would lose his job by partying. He soon agrees and now they arrive to the wrong party but a local friend of Mr. Pankhurst. a little commotion gets stirred but soon everyone realizes it's Perry so they start back partying. The friend invites Perry and his companion to the circus ball the party he was meant to go to so Perry agrees to go with Mr. and Mrs. Tate. They arrive at the circus ball and he sees his love flirting with every guy in the party this makes him really mad but he knows he lose his cool because he don't want anyone to notice that's it's him in the camel suite. not because he's embarrassed or anything he just has this master plan to get his love back. so he dances over all cool and slick trying to get her attention and does, they dance and had a little talk. she wants the man in the camel to tell her she's pretty and just amuse her. This makes Perry so mad because the woman he loves is flirting with people she really don't know then she thought he was some one else out of town visiting the Tate's. so the conversation is over and they party, but soon it's time for the awards to be passed one goes to the snake charmer which is Betty Medill and the Camel with is Perry. as for the Ritual they are supposed to get married just by the Circus Ball standards. So this guy named Jumbo just a normal guy but funny is suppose to be the priest. Jumbo asked Perry do he has his marriage license but since this is a fake wedding it can be a piece of paper or anything. so perry digs through his pants and finds a piece of paper but little does he know that it's the actual marriage license that he presented to Betty when he asked her to marry him. Then Jumbo ask for the ring instead of Mr. Perry having one he forces to the cab driver to take his off or he'll kill him the cab driver is so scared that he does it. so he puts the ring on the snake charmers finger and as soon as they are about to kiss Jumbo realizes that its an actual marriage license and addresses it out loud. He read the names on the paper which were Perry and Betty Pankhurst she is astonished and so is the crowd. so there is the silence in the party and she breaks it by asking him to take off the camel head and having 5 minutes of alone time to talk. He agreed. Now their talking in this secluded hallway and she is basically telling him she doesn't want him and why would he stoop so low to marry her. He didn't plan on it though it just happened but he doesn't get the chance to say that because she is constantly running her mouth. so Perry interrupts her by telling her OK i will renounce our wedding even though it was actually fake but the marriage license all so real. The Cab driver finally speaks and say your my wife too you know. she is like who said that. But she thinks the cab driver is blind and deaf because perry told her that. so the cab driver say you didn't just get married to the head of the camel but the whole camel and perry agrees to that so he states that I'm heading west and I'm going to let you be with your husband if you need me i will be headed west kept repeating himself to make her feel bad. He grabs the door knob to leave but she stops him to tell she love him and she wants to go too.
The story involves a lot of things that relate to the Jazz age philosophy. It involved Bootlegger's and Alcohol. "The Towns ends had determined to assure their party of success, so a great quantity of liquor had been surreptitiously brought over from their house and was now flowing freely". The after hours partying at secluded locations "The circus ball was in full swing." I think Fitzgerald was trying to say that America was not a land of opportunity and equal respect. For example the cab driver couldn't earn any respect because he was a black male. He couldn't Show his face no where till he was away from the people in the party.
Richard Corey:
The people in the poem think that the man named Richard Covey is doing good but doesn't realize that even if your rich and famous you still can have problems. The Poem is an example of Disillusionment.
And he was rich—yes, richer than a king,
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Covey, one calm summer night.
Went home and put a bullet through his head
Mending Wall Robert Frost:
In the poem of Mending Wall. the neighbor of the poet stated that "good fences make good neighbors" but as you continue reading the poem the only time they talked and hung out was when they worked on a fence to repair it from the damage that was done by the hunters and winter season.
What Is a Dream Deferred?
I think the Poem was written during the Harlem Renaissance. It addresses how people in America was saying that America was the place to be but truly it wasn't in this poem Mr. Hughes questioned their belief. it wasn't really a question but you could tell he say ask where is the opportunity when you treat us (black people) like we are nothing but Horse manure to you meaning the white people.
What happens to a dream deferred? What happened to to the land of opportunity is what i think he's saying.
The Negro Speaks of Rivers:
The Story relates to disillusionment, but written during the Harlem Renaissance time period. Langston Hughes was stating that the black people should take credit in what they have accomplish so far in America. When he was saying I he was speaking for people like him which is black people.
I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young. We were the first people on the earth. He was also stating that black people worked hard to get to the point where we are now. I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
Incident:
The Poet is reffering back to when he was a small boy, and remembered this time when he was call a nigger. "And so I smiled, but he poked out
His tongue, and called me, "Nigger"
If the American dream was a land filled with equal oppertunities but obviously it was different back then and really this is what made the Harlem Renaissance start.
Once riding in old Baltimore,
Heart-filled, head-filled with glee,
I saw a Baltimorean
Keep looking straight at me.
This example of Disillusionment is perfect on how the writers of that time attacked the american dream. on how everyone possibly thought that If your in America your going to be okay but with the publishings of Cullen, Hughes, Frost, and other people America and the world soon found out that the American dream wasn't all true.

Unit Three
Original Sin was basically the statement of Adam and eve eating the fruit off the tree when the were told not too. Total depravity really just sums it up because it say that every one is a born sinner because of Adams and eves eagerness.
The transcendentalist thought other wise of it though they didn't really to much believe in Original Sin. They believed that everyone had good inside of them, and that everyone was apart of god. The Transcendentalist also believed that a person's mind could interpret the word of god. A person conscience for example could that be god leading you towards whats right and wrong?
I would say that Hawthorne was a Transcendentalist himself. He thought that his great grand farther was in the wrong for sentencing them to death but he was only doing his job. That still doesn't mean it was right though like the Transcendentalist Theories they didn't believe in Original Sin and I'm pretty sure he didn't either. He supported the Transcendentalist thoughts by writing novels about his grand farther hideous deeds, and the possible wrongs of the puritan beliefs.
Herman Melville Is an Anti-Transcendentalist on the other hand. He witnessed seeing cannibals ( flesh eating human eat other humans) rip apart and cook other people. Obviously everyone can't be a pure and good person. As for Ahab he is another example of why every thing doesn't have a pure soul. he sacrificed all his to mean to fight his temptation of catching a killer whale. I feel him though because the killer whale bit off his leg i'll be mad too but after seeing myself lose my men i would have just gave up. forgive and forget right?
The Anti-Transcendentalist or Dark romantics were people who believed in original sin, which means that everyone is a sinner because of what Adam and Eve did. They also thought that it was the cause of the evil inside of everyone. Dark Romantics believed that there was evil inside of everyone. The Transcendentalist on the hand thought other hand; didn’t believe in original sin. They believed that god could talk to people through other peoples mind, and everyone was generally good.
I think I would fall under being a dark romanticist. Judging by myself I know for a fact that a lot of people are evil so everyone can’t be good. A person can have goodness in them though. But I don’t think Adam and Eve are the cause of it though. If’s that’s the case then how would you explain this: A man is on the brink of losing his mind because taxes are still rising, lost his job and can’t support his family what you think is going to happen? He will either do something about it or ask for help, and when you can’t get help you are forced to do some things on your own which includes robbing.
The black cat:
There was always something bothering him about the death of Pluto and the burning of his house. That he thought he could replace his losses so he tried to replace the cat. Every thing was good until he started having these feelings and thoughts turn up. So he decided to kill the cat and ended up killing his wife with no remorse. ‘I aimed a blow at the animal which, of course, would have proved instantly fatal had it descended as I wished. But this blow was arrested by the hand of my wife. Goaded, by the interference, into a rage more than demoniacal, I withdrew my arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain. She fell dead upon the spot, without a groan’. Perfect example of why people aren’t 100% good. 'The corpse, already greatly decayed and clotted with gore, stood erect before the eyes of the spectators. Upon its head, with red extended mouth and solitary eye of fire, sat the hideous beast whose craft had seduced me into murder, and whose informing voice had consigned me to the hangman. I had walled the monster up within the tomb'. In theis short little statement he was stating that he is nnow free of all the thoughts and dreams of the cat. He still had a little sense though because he still knew no matter what he killed his wife and that bothered him just a tad. "The monster, in terror, had fled the premises forever! I should behold it no more! My happiness was supreme! The guilt of my dark deed disturbed me but little. Some few inquiries had been made, but these had been readily answered".
The Raven
Deep into that darkness pearing, I wondered. This really stuck out to me because i could only wonder whether he was talking about dying or not."Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!" I shrieked, upstarting--"Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul has spoken!Leave my loneliness unbroken!--quit the bust above my door! Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!"
This whole Paragraph I think he was telling the bird to release him of all the pain he was feeling from Lenore's death. How her death made him miserable. but the bird was telling him to just move on, and try to let it go.
It goes against the Transcendentalist theory because of how in the story the man is slowly killing himself his self and his wife. How can a man go through with that? this basically is screaming that all people are not pure don't get wrong though some people are saints but not all. His conscience on the other hand was telling him to bad thing which were controlled by the raven you can say or his imagination. "But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore?"This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!"
In the story of The Raven Edgar Allen Poe used alot of symbolism as for darkness was an example of probably fright or the objection of being scared. "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before;
The Black bird is like possibly a sign of the grim reaper or something i think it represented death. ""Wretch," I cried, "thy God hath lent thee, by these angels he hath sent thee Prophet! said I, "thing of evil!--prophet still, if bird or devil! And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreamingAnd the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadows on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floorShall be lifted--nevermore!. This supports my idea because the raven did come for his life and to set him free as well because he turned insane.

How Hip Hop Can Effect You
Hip-Hop is influential and intellectual in many kinds of ways. Hip-Hop lyrics and Hip-Hop play a major role in today’s society. And a big factor in young adults and adults lives today. It is believed that Hip-Hop originated in New York City, from Harlem all the way to Brooklyn. Then Hip-Hop got introduced to the, South in which it became known as rap. Nobody really knows how Hip-Hop got started. Some people say hip hop has a negative effect on kids today. While adults young or old say that hip hop has a positive affect on them, it is true that hip does influence people in a positive or negative way. But some people say its just Hip-Hop music itself that affects people in the community.
Now hip hop is one of the fastest growing businesses in the world, and music is just a gift that God gave to us. Many rappers may be talking about using drugs and sexually exploiting women, but then again they can make a song for kids and people are surprised they could do that. They think that because they may have used some negative things in their songs but don’t hold it against them. Jay Z It’s A Hard Knock Life song focused on drugs in America especially the projects, peoples addiction to it, and kids life at home with no dad or abusing farther etc. People are saying Hip-Hop is a bad thing well that is why we have different forms of Hip-Hop. If you are comfortable with your child listening to Hip-Hop then that is good. Hip hop could inspire a movement in any kind of way it just depend on what aspects you look at it from.
Uncut rap: make have a lot of negative energy for a lot kids today but that’s why some people like it because it gets an adrenaline going, something like a Red Bull. Hip-Hop/R&B and Blues, that’s for the people who like singing and the soothing beat while listen to a little rap. Blues usually calms down people or make them dance doesn’t it? For Example a classic blues joint by Slim Harpo’s I’m A King Bee in his lyrics he is basic stating call him when you need some loving when your man is gone or when ever. And also he can guarantee good satisfaction too.Well I'm a king bee, buzzing around your hiveI'm young and able to buzz all night longWell when you hear me buzzin' baby, some stinging is going on.Well I'm a king bee, can buzz all night longWell I can buzz better baby, when your man is gone.
And If you compare it to an uncut rap song I guarantee it would be the same central meaning and have the same effect of what their saying. Devin Da dudes verse in I’m so hornyI see Ur pussy lips smilin and grinnin like they want sumthin up in em'I wanted to ask you for sum but didn't want to affend ya.I thought I could run a good race girl u can do miles.Lay on ya side raise up ya legLet me see that beautiful smile.
R&B is its own genre of music but can still have forms of Hip-Hop in it as well.
As for the I’m A King Bee and I’m So Horny song, an R&B song can have the same meaning too. It probably wouldn’t be that explicit as Hip-Hop/Rap, but a person could understand the point of what the artist is saying. Under by: Pleasure P
Callin' my river to let her knowI'ma be on my wayMissin' how the river flow evenThough it's only been a couple of days
I'ma hold my breath until you feel it in you chest
When I go under, under
I ain't coming up until you scream you've had enough
When I go under, under.
Some People might say okay he and the girl are just swimming. That’s not the case here remember what Devin and Slims verses said same train of thought.
Different types of music affect people in different types of ways. As an example if you wanted some music to get you hyped up for a big game, it would either be rock or rap. Late night session with the one you love, it would be R&B right? Blues could be played to make you laugh or dance.
The main objective in my story was to inform you that Hip-Hop can be positive or negative it all depends on how you’re listening to it
